Travel tips for parents with a child on the Autism Spectrum.
We are a family of 6, Elizabeth and I (Ken) met at the end of 2013. Elizabeth had 3 sons from a previous marriage when she met me. We fell in Love right away and I had an instant family. After a year we were engaged to be married and started talking about adding a baby into the mix. I never experienced the joy of raising a baby. To make our long story a bit shorter, after a few years of failed IVF attempts we found ourselves looking to a different direction. With the help of social media we found and amazing family looking to give the gift of life to a couple in our position. Pearl was conceived through and Embryo donation. fast forward five years. We have a great open relationship with the donors and everyone involved couldn't be happier.
From early on we noticed signs of Pearl's autism. All of her milestones were in range, but she wasn't responding to her name, she had some fixations and definitely had sensory issues from early on. As time developed and she entered into pre-school we were met with challenges early on. After one week, the school had to limit her attendance because of the distraction to the rest of the class. With a lot of determination to help our child out to the best of our ability as quickly as possible, we reached out to have her evaluated. Pearl was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder just before the age of 4. We did as much research as we could and came to understand the value of early intervention. We enrolled her into ABA Therapy (Applied behavior analysis) and they have been working with Pearl 5 days a week at school, home and in-clinic. Pearl loves her behavioral health technicians and their work has helped to to enjoy more from life.
We are only a short way into a long journey and sure to hit more bumps in the road. Currently we are awaiting testing for ADHD (Attention Defecit Hyper Active Disorder) and or Possibly OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). Pearl has also been diagnosed with Epilepsy which is quite common with people on the Autism Spectrum. I'm not a fan of all the "Labels" Pearl is who she is. She is capable of anything and she is exactly who she is supposed to be.
